PS3 wont turn on after playing MAG

I was playing MAG... interdiction and halfway during the match, my ps3 randomly shuts off and it wont turn back on.
whenever i try to turn it on, the light turns green, then yellow, then flashes red. i have looked online and people said it cant be fixed, but that i could buy a refurbished PS3 from sony for $150!! And that i would lose ALL of my data!!!
i had the PS3 since 2006 and i dont want 4 years of hard work going down the drain. If you guys have any suggestions, please..... i could use them

dude that is horrible horrible news. I would call sony customer service amego. I would hate for you to have to restart

sony is too cheap. they will make me pay $150 just to fix it, when it was their fault in the first place. i dont even think i will get my data back if they fixed it. OH! and my MAG disc is stuck in the ps3 and it wont come out.

are people on craigslist.org that post they can fix these problems as

What this sounds like is the dreaded YLOD. I have found some vids on
youtube that might help you.

This last one has 5 parts so double click it to open in new window and you will see all of them in the side bar.

None of those videos are guaranteed to work, in a way it's almost better to pay the $150 and just be done with it. Either way it's possible for the YLOD to return.

You should be able to fill out some kind of form to get your MAG disk back. As for the HDD, there's probably some way to back up it's contents before sending it in. If you upgraded it you could always put the original HDD back and keep the upgraded one, or if you have a laptop you might be able to install the HDD and backup to an external drive.

Then there's the more expensive route. If your not too attached to the backwards compatibility, this YLOD seems to only be a problem with the original 60GB model. Buying a new PS3 should completely solve your problem.

Whatever you do, don't strip the screws! They are a bitch to replace now that Sony doesn't do it.

yeh, im not going to try to open the system because then Sony wont even try to fix it. I have the 80GB model, it was never in a tight space, always blew hot air out of the vents (and thats good b/c it cools the interior). It's Sony's fault in the first place. I'm going to call Sony corporate, instruct the operator that i would like to be connected to Customer Service, explain about the poor and horrible reliability of the PS3 (with a sob story), and try to drain out a free system. and if i get the system, i might repair my current one for $75. (i found a guy on craigslist)

Im not gonna let sony drain money out of my wallet b/c it was their fault to begin with. They even adressed this problem. They know whats happening, but they're being assholes and wont do anything unless they get the money they DONT deserve

YLOD is relatively rare in models outside of the launch 60GB, you make it sound like most PS3s break, your problem is completely coincidental. The fail rate of the PS3 is pretty minimal.

Good luck getting Sony to budge. They wouldn't send me 4 screws, they wouldn't even sell me 4 screws, I highly doubt they'll budge.

yes really. Just bought a heat gun and I'm taking it apart now. So I should be online in a matter of hours. If this fixes my 40 gig I will do the same to my 60 gig.

The heat gun only temporarily fixes your PS3. It's gonna get the YLOD again in a matter of months if you do it right, but in a matter of days or hours if u dont do it long enough or in the wrong spots

From what I hear is that Sony ships these boards off to a place where they have a special oven to cook them in.

anyway first attempt = fail. I will try again. It's not like I'm losing anything if it doesn't work. I'm trying it out on my original 40 gig I've had in my closet for some time. Plus if it works I can always trade it in at gamestop. hehehe

lmao I now own a brick. Broke a connector while taking my 60 gig apart. Man there was a lot of dust packed up inside that thing. My 40 gig sill no good. I will just have to save a few hundred and by a slim. I don't think I'll miss the backwards compatibility at all. Gor_Gor has a 60 gig so I can swap HHD and back up my info.
Just to bad my disk is still in there.

Dead, did you try a force eject? Apparently it can damage your system but if it's already frack where's the harm. Hold the Eject button down for around 10s. The fans should go into overdrive and the drive should eject any disc stuck inside.

didnt work , same old thing. And everytime i try to turn the PS3 on, i hear it trying but it doesnt quite get there. Stupid solder

I heard about some other way to eject but it only works on 60G PS3's

I couldn't take it so I bought a new system. I'll have to swap drives with Gor_Gor as he has a 60 gig to back up my data. Just took the drive apart to get my MAG disk back. All good now

Atleast you have a job..... i turn 15 August 24th and in my area, u have to be 15 in a half to be able to work..... my parents make me pay for everything i get, so i do little things around the neighborhood to earn money, i should send my system to gophermods soon and have a working PS3 again. sorry guys, i wish i could play with u all

@ REV919 my parents were the same way. Had to get a paper route plus I had a lawn care company where I would go door to door and ask if I could get paid to cut their grass. I had many accounts in that business. Oh the joys of being a young entrepreneur. I wish it was still that easy. lol
