Offensive Sniping - general tips for a Marksman Empty
PostSubject: Offensive Sniping - general tips for a Marksman   Offensive Sniping - general tips for a Marksman EmptyTue Sep 07, 2010 7:53 am

Ok I know Snipers often get dissed because of known reasons, however I feel they play an important role.
My second character slot is now designated for sniping (in preparation for the new skill tree if implemented in the retail). Therefore I would like to see some general and specific tips in enhancing my and perhaps others skills in sniping.

Positioning and map knowledge is of course very important and whilst defending I am already doing ok. I would really welcome comments regarding some superb spots when defending but especially when attacking.

Acquisition - 2nd platoon Alpha bunker side - walk back to the sewer holes, jump up the crate, turn and walk to the back of Alpha bunker - Great coverage of all attackers on the ledge and right/left side of the bunker back - no clear sight on the console though, but man can a sniper make the difference there.

Unfortunately that's the only great spot I know, would like to know many more though.

Anyway I am playing with the tier 1 SE rifle with either grip or bi-pod and attacking with silencer.
My main problem is I have extreme difficulties killing enemies with hip fire - the white center dot is on their body, however the hits don't seem to register - any tips on that or how to increase my effectiveness sniping offensively?

I would really love to be more of an asset attacking DOM/ACQ/SAB as a sniper who attacks, but whilst I get great KDR's defending when sniping I can't seem to get good stuff attacking.

Loadout tips are welcome as well :

Defensive loadout :

HM90SE - grip/bi-pod - normal visor
Full Rez
Multi-Tool

Offensive loadout :

HM90SE - Grip - normal visor - silencer
Full Rez
grenades
RPG

Well any tips are welcome regarding loadouts/positioning/hipfiring etcetera.
I'll make sure I'll be running with Experiment as it seems he is great at offensive sniping as well.

Second tier snipe rifle, high power/multi scope, bipod 'n' silencer
Claymores are essential if you're gettin behind spawns like i do (sabo with valour is brilliant for this)
Biggest armour you can fit

You can sit next to the building directly to the left of the church 'n' go nuts

Don't bother with rez, you're there to snipe, not to run around after other people, generally when you die it's from another headshot from a sniper or you're too far out for others to rez you.

Tried the grip with the 1st tier = fail

Woah whaaaaaaaat. I think it's a requirement for all people to have full rez anyways, plus it's pretty helpful if your not a camper to go around rezzing people, = more people to kill too.

This vid shows how to do well with the T3, and it's basically the same thing to do with the T2. Quicksniping is great when your attacking, reccomend not wearing that ridicously heavy armor since being behind people and them not seeing you before your gone is key when your sniping and attacking. Advanced or re-enforced is probably your best bet since you can take a hit or two.

A great place to snipe on Corvus defending is up by the triple a behind the bunker but in front of the triple a to the left of the bridge. There's a little pillar there that you can look down on the plant for the alpha bunker (at least I think that's alpha bunker) as well as the gate, be careful of people on the opposite side of the bridge though, cause they can hide behind those boxes and kill you.

PostSubject: Re: Offensive Sniping - general tips for a Marksman   Offensive Sniping - general tips for a Marksman EmptyWed Sep 08, 2010 2:14 am

I used the DLC sniper as a giant pistol whenever I even tried to snipe and just ran around attempting to kill people. Gave up since headshots never seem to give headshots and it takes a ridiculous amount of ammo to kill someone with the T1 sniper.

I tried for this medal 3 or 4 different times and gave up every time. Sniping just feels off in MAG. Compared to CoD4 where I almost exclusively sniped with my trusty M40A1 w/ACOG.

PostSubject: Re: Offensive Sniping - general tips for a Marksman   Offensive Sniping - general tips for a Marksman EmptyWed Sep 08, 2010 11:49 am

I feel sniping is a crucial element in this game when done well. On offense it's best to be as fluid as possible as the battlefield is constantly changing. We all know the well worn sniping positions, I have decent success dropping prone in unlikely places, I've laid down in a patch of grass on the street just to keep eyes on a planted charge. The enemy tends to not notice snipers on the ground as much they are more apt to hunt a sniper in an elevated position bc the sniper takes too many shots from one spot.

IMO, for snipers it's not about the kill count but rather taking out the high priority targets, repairmen, defusers, and of course enemy snipers!

Offensive Sniping - general tips for a Marksman Empty
PostSubject: Re: Offensive Sniping - general tips for a Marksman   Offensive Sniping - general tips for a Marksman EmptyWed Sep 08, 2010 5:18 pm

Up until recently i was doing counter sniping with the AR and 4x scope and its amazing at doing that job.

But as for the 1st tier run and gun(hipfiring) it takes several hours of using it to get used to it and get good at it.Dont give up on it just push through the bad games.

If you are going to go prone and snipe dont use the tier 3 use the 2nd tier. It can be silenced and may take a extra shot but if you variable scope it you can take several shots before they know where you are at. Plus that way you can still move and be rezing.

When attacking as a sniper always use either the T1 or T2, never attack with the T3 unless u are going to snipe from the spawn then move up as the bunkers go down. If you are staying back onthe attack the shoot the turrets as it dows damage, and if it gets blow you will get a assist. Who knows your sniper round maybe the one that takes out the turret.

While on attack as the bunkers are being taken down get to where you can see one of the end bunkers and the approach points for the defenders and take them down as they come to repair.

Always know what your role is going to be in any given game(mode) and depending on whos in your squad. Also know that there are better snipers out there and it may take you sometime to get to know where some decent spots are and when and where to move. As a begining sniper you may die more than you kill, but its all part of the learning process.

Also if you are going full sniper get the machine pistol and kife upgrades incase someone gets close.

Finally as always when you DOA you have your full rez kit no matter what you are doing.

We just kicked a guy out of his trial run with us because he refused to get a full medkit/he msgd saying kick him or he was leaving so it didnt matter.

Remeber it takes time to get good at any role in this game and above all else HAVE FUN!!!!!!!

if you're attacking, you don't really need anything more than a t1 unless you're redlining them, you need the faster fire rate more than the range. Stay a bit back and support. That's what I do, and some of you played with me, so you know what I do.

Offensive Sniping - general tips for a Marksman Empty
PostSubject: Re: Offensive Sniping - general tips for a Marksman   Offensive Sniping - general tips for a Marksman EmptySun Sep 12, 2010 6:45 pm

My tips on sniping is simply;

T1 sniper
SE if you want quicker firing (better for run and gun)
Normal HM if you want more stability for more mid-long range shots(minor difference but I feel it, but thats probably in my head). Also the slight damage values barely matter as it takes the same shots all round.

Pistol is much better at close range than the sniper (Im talking too close to scope and you have to have the pistol skills). This still depends on luck, sometimes youll get an insta head shot or get 2-3 hits in a row...other times youll miss 10 shots and should be dead by then...

Probably got more tips but this is all for now!

Offensive Sniping - general tips for a Marksman Empty
PostSubject: Re: Offensive Sniping - general tips for a Marksman   Offensive Sniping - general tips for a Marksman EmptyMon Sep 13, 2010 4:18 pm

A few good spots i like:

SABOTAGE

Defending Raven Sabo @ A:
Left side of A there is a small hill with brushery. In this hill, there is a small dip where if laying prone, you can see under the brush sighting the top front staircase perfectly. You can also see the ammo depot and all front entry points leading to the staircase. Lay down a few claymores behind you in the brush for protection and blow some heads off.

Defending Raven Sabo @ B:
Go midway up the hill to the right of B, on your way to C. You'll see a boulder to your left right behind a fence. Jump over the fence, and lay prone between the fence and the boulder. There is a few shrubs behind the boulder for excellent claymore placement. Boulder offers cover from the attacking side, and fence prevents units from running into you with a knife. You have a perfect view of B's stairway to the top, and a pretty decent view of the right side stair and insides of B as well. Once you've shot a few down, in case some come looking for you, i find moving over to the ruins a bit towards the enemy spawn is a good way to catch them unaware. You'll see them running on your mini-map towards the boulder thinking you're still there, and BOOM, you're on top of them.

Defending Raven Sabo @ C:
Obviously, on top level of C is a great spot, but kinda easy to spot and get sniped yourself. If you can make it back to the other objectives, getting on the top level aint a bad spot either, but view isnt that great. There's a glitch that let's you get to the absolute top of the temple @ C ... but i dont know how to do it. It is however a great spot for a sniper. My fav spot is on side A, just around the corner of the front wall. You can see everybody running up to C from there, and hardly anyone ever comes around back.

Attacking Raven Sabo @ A:
Same as defending it, if you can manage to make it there and not get killed. Awesome spot to drop everyone clusterfucking the entrance at the ammo depot. You can also see pretty well in the objective through the cracks.

Attacking Raven Sabo @ B:
Left side of B, in the temple ruins, past the ammo supply temple, lay prone agaisnt the wall in cover of grass. You wont be able to see the objective, but you can see everyone on either sides of the forward wall. Useful for supporting your own troops, and taking down on-comming enemy troops.

Attacking Raven Sabo @ C:
On top of the temple where you paracute in. Hide behind the antenna, or slide down the right side to a lower level. Also, on B side, near the trailer in the middle of the road, to the right a little, there is a rock with some brush cover offering a decent view of the route for the ppl spawning @ B. Lay down, and pick some of them off.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Defending SVER Sabo @ A:
If you manage to redline them, move up front in the middle, go up the right stair and lay prone or crouched next to the ciment wall to the right side of the gate. You can see in front of the gate here if anyone is hiding in wait of others to catch up. And if you scoot over a bit, you can see snipers hidden in the hills from time to time. With that ciment wall as cover, you can quickly hide if they spot you. Make sure you lay down a claymore behind you in the path to the right side, in case a guy come in behind you.

Defending SVER Sabo @ B:
Top left hand side on ciment bridge leading to the shelf. Lay prone in between 2 of the ciment dividers. This will provide cover when the enemy shoots back at you. Moving left or right, you'll be able to see both sides of the cabin where they must pass if you want to gain access to the bridge leading to B. If the action gets too heavy, jump down from your hiding spot. The high fall might hurt a bit, but the high wall will give you enough time to run for cover.

Defending SVER Sabo @ C:
Spawn @ A, run to the bridge to enter C, but dont go in. Lay down behind the ciment block to the right of the bridge. Scope in to the train tracks and have some fun. Make sure to have a look from time to time to the right side of that ciment block as enemy snipers like to camp above that ridge. If you see any troops moving in from that side, make sure to pick em off before they reach you.

Attacking SVER Sabo @ A:
Down the middle, right side of bridge in the stairs. Not really any good cover from attacks comming from the right side, but most of them will be comming from the left anyways. Lay prone, and inch forward or backward for cover. Go up the stairs as much as you can, without getting to the top of the bridge. This way no one on the left hand side will be able to see you, and you get partial cover from the front by backing away from the ledge. Lay down claymores in top part of stairs incase someone comes running over the bridge. Snipe into roadway leading down to where you are, and also into objective.

Attacking SVER Sabo @ B:
Anywhere behind a ciment wall above the ammo depot. Lay claymores down in the stairs leading to top to warn you if they start to push back. Aim at staircases leading up to objective.

Attacking SVER Sabo @ C:
As mentionned above, on side A, you have the bird's nest tower if you wish, or the ledge next to the building. You can also go on the mid-level ledge and advance up near the left hand side entry point. Stay on the ledge, and support your troops trying to make their way in. You'll find there is always a cluster-frack of men there trying to push back. Hide behind the ciment wall, and shoot away.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Defending Valor Sabo @ A:
Up on the right side of A without jumping out of you're spawn area. Great view of the objective. Also, behind A on right side, behind the sand bags. Lay prone and aim down the right side of A. You're sure to see a bunch running towards it. You can also move down from there and aim down the train tracks. Same goes for left side of A, down the road. Move to left side of road, and lay prone in grass cover, wait and kill.

Defending Valor Sabo @ B:
On top of either of the houses to the right side of B. That's all i got. Other than the obvious bird's nest above the objective, but i dont like those.

Defending Valor Sabo @ C:
B side, before dropping down, left side of the building, lay prone and snipe paratroopers as they fly. Or drop down, and climb up ladder as you enter the cabin It brings you into an enclosed niche. Or drop down, but stay in the open area, crouch next to the sand bags and aim at the long staircase and shoot anything runnign up. Make sure you put down a claymore in front or behind you in the walkway up to the cabin though in case the enemy makes it up to you. A side, on top ledge leading to back side staircase. Next to the boulder, lay prone and shoot. I dont like going up top, as eveybody knows there's snipers there. Then of course, theres the top nook on the 3rd floor, up the ladder. Same applies to it.

Attacking Valor Sabo @ A:
Go far left, all along the left side until you reach the last tent before the tower. Lay down claymores on either side of the tower. Then back up to the tent and scope in towards the objective. Great view inside from here. After you shoot a few, move up to the ammo supply, reload your claymores, and snipe in from the tent in front of it. Lay down claymores behind you for protection, and alternate between those two spots, reloading claymores each time.

Attacking Valor Sabo @ B:
Go left, down the road, then turn right in the 1st alley you come across. Jump on the barrels, then look back towards your spawn, and jump over the fence. Then go up the little ramp, but dont jump back out, turn left and walk on the fence to get to the little shed. Jump on shed and snipe away.

Attacking Valor Sabo @ C:
A side, go completly left, up to the sand bag wall leading up to their spawn, jump on the rock there to the right side, and run towards the sand bags and jump(you will need light armor to do this trick). Once on the other side, follow the right side of the cleft, and you'll find it goes down to a lower ledge at one point. Place a claymore behind you, and one in front of you on this ledge, and snipe away. The enemy wont be able to figure out where it's comming from. Razz

I wont go into ACQ or DOM as there are simply WAY TOO MANY spots to choose from, and i dont feel like writting up a wall-o-text any larger than this one. You'll just have to run around on your own and try different spots.

Hope these help anyways, even though we dont play sabo nearly as much as the other game types.

Cheers! and happy hunting!

Have got to agree. I feel the difference too. I prefer the Standard HM 90 as the scope wander is next to none, even without any upgrades and it settles faster than the SE.

Haha I just realised how badly worded my previous post was Surprised

Yeah the quicker fire rate of the SE is great for no scopes but the better stability of the original gives it more acurate shots a second than the SE.

I prefer the SE because while the base 90 is more stable, the SE is more powerful, and for a basic 120/Light soldier, it takes 3 HM90 shots but 2 HM90SE shots I believe.

Can't say I noticed a difference in overall stopping power. Could just be where the hits were registered though.
